Typical dishes of New Zealand
I am from New Zealand, so I thought I would share some typical dishes of NZ.
A classic meal is just meat and vegetables… but I’m sure you have that in most countries.
Hangi
A hangi is a traditional Maori meal where food is cooked in the ground. Rocks are heated then food is wrapped in wet sacks/cloth and placed on top of these hot rocks. All of these are then covered by dirt. The food is slowed cooked by steam caused by the hot stones heating the wet cloth.
More information about the Hangi can be found here: Māori Hangi
Pavlova
Pavlova is a typical dessert of New Zealand. It is made from merengue covered in whipped cream and with fresh fruit on top, typically strawberries or kiwifruit. It’s name in honour of the ballerina called Anna Pavlova, who visited New Zealand and Australia in 1926.
Fish and Chips
This is battered fish and hot chips (thick french fries). It is wrapped in paper and eaten at home on down on the beach. Some families have a Friday night (or Saturday night) tradition of Fish & Chips. This dish is common in many Commonwealth countries.
