Proud – Meaning and Examples
Proud is an adjective.
Proud = feeling pleasure or satisfaction about something (including achievements) that you have done or qualities or someone/something you are connected with. You can also be proud about achievements or qualities of other people you are closely associated with (such as family or colleagues)
- I’m proud of finishing my painting.
- We’re proud of her.
- She was proud of her son when he finally got his university degree.
Noticed how we normally use these structures:
- proud + of + something/someone
I am proud of my award. - proud + of + gerund (verb-ing)
I am proud of winning this award.
What tense is used in this question?

Have + done = the present perfect tense.
Why is the present perfect tense in this question?
Because we are talking about THIS YEAR … and this year has started but it hasn’t finished.

What are you proud of?
Many people may think they have nothing to be proud of?
You don’t have to only be proud of big significant events or changes in your life. You can also be proud of small achievements.
Let’s look at some things you may be proud of:
- learning a new recipe
- learning a new language (or at least a few words or phrases)
- caring for someone you love very much
- having a wonderful family
- being able to play a musical instrument
- composing a song or writing a poem
- being able to spend more quality time with people you want to.
- writing a story or a book
- drawing a picture, a cartoon or a comic
- painting a picture (oil, watercolor, etc.)
- doing something you never thought you would do before
- studying something you always wanted to study
- reading a book
- building a garden and watching the fruit or vegetables grow
- creating a business (entrepreneurship)
- learning to crochet or knit with wool
- repairing something in your house (instead of paying someone else to fix it)
- doing a home improvement
- passing a level of a video game or completing the game
- doing yoga or meditation to improve my health
- learning to dance or learn a new choreography
- staying healthy (with so many temptations around you)
- learning how to use new technology
- seeing how your children face their challenges
- completing a puzzle or a jigsaw puzzle
- assembling a Lego structure (and not having any pieces left over)
- keeping in touch with someone despite being apart for so long
- making some crafts by hand
- getting a promotion at work
- receiving an award
