Good at …
You are GOOD AT (doing) something because of practice.
Compare these two sentences:
- I am good at English.
- I am good at speaking English
The first one says you are good at a thing.
The second sentence says you are good at doing something.
good at + noun (something)
- I am good at English.
- He is good at Football.
good at + gerund (verb-ing)
If are describing how you are good at an action, then you use a gerund (verb-ing) after good at.
Remember in English we use the structure: preposition + gerund
(good at + gerund)
- I am good at speaking English (good at + gerund) gerund = verb-ing
- He is good at playing Football
Before good at you can also use an adverb to give more detail:
- They are very good at negotiating.
- He is extremely good at making people laugh.
When you add an adverb + good, you can often change them for a more specific word:
- They are great at negotiating.
- He is brilliant at making people laugh.
